LASIK eye surgery is the best-known and most commonly performed surgery to correct vision problems. LASIK is an alternative procedure to Glasses and Contact Lenses. LASIK is also a common name used for a group of surgeries (PRK/ EPILASIK/ LASIK/ Topoguided LASIK/ Contoura/ wavefront-guided LASIK/ FLEX/SMILE) done on the cornea to remove dependency on glasses or contact lenses.

Our experienced Lasik Surgeons are constantly working on a checklist that helps avoid potential complications in LASIK treatment through careful evaluation and planning.

You will be subjected to a thorough evaluation and will be informed of every minor detail so you can make an informed decision. Our doctors will first examine your vision and look for any abnormalities that may cause potential complications.

Several scans will be done to assess eligibility for Laser vision correction which include the thickness of the eyeball, curvature, and pattern of the eyeball, dryness, allergies, and various important measurements.  After Careful and Meticulous planning you will have to further Undergo tests that determine complete eligibility.

LASIK surgery may be an option for the correction of one of these vision problems:

Near sightedness (myopia)

When your eyeball is slightly longer than normal or when the cornea curves too sharply, light rays focus in front of the retina and blur distant vision. You can see objects that are close fairly clearly, but not those that are far away.

Far sightedness (hyperopia)

When you have a shorter-than-average eyeball or a cornea that is too flat, light focuses behind the retina instead of on it. This makes near vision, and sometimes distant vision, blurry.

Astigmatism

When the cornea curves or flattens unevenly, the result is astigmatism, which disrupts the focus of near and distant vision.

During LASIK Correction, a special laser is used to accurately change the shape of the clear tissue at the front of your eye (cornea) to improve vision.

In eyes with normal vision, the light coming from a distance is focused exactly on the retina. But myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism, the light is focused incorrectly, resulting in blurred vision. Laser-vision correction reshapes the tissues in front to focus the light exactly on the retina.

Glasses and contact lenses also do the same. But with Laser vision correction, one can see clearly without depending on glasses and contact lenses.

LASIK surgery may be an option for the correction of one of these vision problems:

  • Nearsightedness (myopia). When your eyeball is slightly longer than normal or when the cornea curves too sharply, light rays focus in front of the retina and blur distant vision. You can see objects that are close fairly clearly, but not those that are far away.
  • Farsightedness (hyperopia). When you have a shorter than average eyeball or a cornea that is too flat, light focuses behind the retina instead of on it. This makes near vision, and sometimes distant vision, blurry.
  • Astigmatism. When the cornea curves or flattens unevenly, the result is astigmatism, which disrupts focus of near and distant vision.

If you’re considering LASIK surgery, you probably already wear glasses or contact lenses. Your eye doctor will talk with you about whether LASIK surgery or another similar refractive procedure is an option that will work for yo

Steps you can take to prepare for surgery include:

  • Know what surgery may cost you. LASIK surgery is usually considered elective surgery, and Cosmetic upto a certain extent. In India Some Insurances provide full coverage while most have restrictions either on minimum power to be present.(Some say -5 while others agree for -7.0) although we feel everyone has the right to see 6/6 vision without spectacles. It is a pre-paid Service so-On arrival at the centre on the date of surgery before admission you will be asked to make full payment
  • Arrange someone to drive you home. You’ll need to have somebody to drive you, to the place of surgery and from your place of surgery. Immediately after surgery, you might still feel the effects of medicine given to you before surgery, and your vision may be blurry.
  • Do not wear Eye makeup. Don’t use eye makeup, cream, perfumes or lotions on the day before and on the day of your Procedure. Your doctor may also instruct you to clean your eyelashes daily or more often in the days leading up to surgery, to remove debris and minimize your risk of infection.

Long-term results from LASIK tend to be best in people who are carefully evaluated before surgery to ensure that they are good candidates for the procedure. So Don’t worry at Vijaya Nethralaya we have a foolproof system of evaluation of patients. Our expert surgeons and checklists are designed to prevent complications.

If you wear contact lenses, which can change the shape of your cornea, you’ll need to completely stop wearing them and wear only your glasses for at least 10 days before your evaluation and surgery. Don’t worry we will provide specific guidelines depending on the type of contacts you wear and how long you’ve been wearing contact lenses.

During the evaluation, your eye doctor will ask about your medical and surgical history and give you a comprehensive eye examination to evaluate your vision and assess whether you can undergo the procedure safely.

Our doctor will look for signs of:

  • Eye infection
  • Inflammation
  • Dry eyes
  • Large pupils
  • High eye pressure etc
  • Any weak areas in the Retina

We will measure your cornea, noting the shape, contour, thickness and any irregularities by Corneal Scan – Tomography, We will Assess the thickness of your Cornea, layer By layer using OCT pachymetry

We will use the best available technology to evaluate your eye in detail before LASIK surgery. A Schiempflug Imaging device is used to take a tomography of your Cornea and study the optical system and Pupils in detail. We will Also Study your Tear Film (The coating over Cornea) by using Schiempflug Scans.

Before surgery, we will discuss the risks and benefits of LASIK surgery, what to expect before and after surgery, and any questions you may have.

LASIK surgery is usually completed in 30 minutes or less. During the procedure, you lie on your back in a reclining chair. You may be given medicine to help you relax.

After numbing drops are placed in your eye, our Expert Lasik surgeon will use an instrument to hold your eyelids open.

Depending on the type of procedure a more comprehensive explanation will be provided by us helping us choose the right variant for you, but in general:

Using a programmed laser, our LASIK surgeon reshapes parts of your cornea. With each pulse of the laser beam, a tiny amount of corneal tissue is Burnt. After reshaping the cornea, the surgeon lays the flap back into place. The flap usually heals without stitches.

During the surgery, you’ll be asked to focus on a point of light. Staring at this light helps you keep your eye fixed while the laser reshapes your cornea. You may smell a distinct odour as the laser removes your corneal tissue. Some people describe smelling the odour as similar to that of burning hair.

We normally perform LASIK on Both Eyes on the same day.

Do’s and Dont’s

  • Do use the medication as prescribed:-

Antibiotic and Steroid Drops 4 times a day, Lubricating drops as necessary. Tablets as prescribed.

  • Do wear Protective glasses – On the first day even during sleep protective glasses should be worn.
  • Do not touch or squeeze your eyes.
  • Do not let water enter the eyes

Use sterile wipes as Instructed by the nurse at the time of discharge to clean around your eyes and your face. Do not use cloth, or tissue paper to clean your eyes.

If eyes are watering then use tissue or cloth to wipe tears over the cheeks only. Do not wipe close to the eyelids

If Bandage Contact Lenses are placed then care must be taken to retain them- do not squeeze the eyes or rub around your eyes. If you take care the lenses will stay in place. In the worst-case scenario of Bandage Contact lens dislocating and coming out of the eye…you should not attempt to place them back in the eye. If you do so then the eye will get infected!!! It is very difficult to treat infected eyes. The best thing to do is to apply antibiotic drops and keep the eyes shut and Visit our centre on an emergency basis. Our centre being a daycare facility is functional only between 9 am to 8 Pm. If the lens comes off beyond this time then it’s important to keep the eyes shut. Keep applying drops and take medication to control Pain. This is More than sufficient. you can call our Helpline on 9008638530 for further assistance.

Immediately after surgery, your eye might itch, and you may also experience a little burning and watering. You might experience blurred vision too. You may experience little pain, and you’ll usually recover very quickly.

You will be given medication for pain and eyedrops to keep you comfortable for several hours after the procedure. We might also ask you to wear protective glasses over your eye at night until your eye heals.

You’ll be able to see after surgery, but your vision will not be clear right away, vision recovery heavily Depends on the variant of laser vision correction, It might take a few hours, with some variants it might take a few days as well. We will keep you well informed about the type of Laser vision correction and the duration of healing.

You’ll have a follow-up appointment with us one to two days after surgery. We will see how your eye is healing and check for any complications. Plan for other follow-up appointments during the first six months after surgery as we recommend.

It might be a month before you use cosmetics around your eyes again.

We will inform you about how soon you can resume your normal activities.

With LASIK more than 96% of patients experience 6/6 or 20/20 vision while 100% can enjoy independence from Glasses and Contact lenses.

Following the instructions meticulously avoids potential Complications

The good news is that LASIK eye surgery is not painful. Right before your procedure, we will place numbing (Anaesthetic) eye drops into both of your eyes. While you may still feel a little bit of pressure during the procedure, you should not feel any pain.
