ICL (Implantable Collamer Lenses)

ICL are Lenses implanted inside the eye to correct high amount of Power that normally cannot be corrected with LASER Vision Correction.

Autonomy of ICL

ICL is the oldest and most widely implanted amongst all available Phakic IOLs (Group of lenses implanted in the presence of Natural Lenses) in the market.

There are two types of ICL. ICL plain and ICL Toric) Respectively.

A detailed eye examination including cornea scans and Axial Length of the eye needs to be done. These Custom lenses are manufactured to cater to the needs of Individual eyes so it may take up to 1 month for the Delivery of these lenses from the time of Order. 50% of the surgery package Price needs to be paid at the time of Order (NON-Refundable) and the remaining 50% needs to be paid before the surgery.  

If planning Insurance it is wise to take approval for Cashless after delivery of the Lens to avoid the expiry of time given for surgery by the insurance company. Insurance Claims are the Best way forward as Claims may also include Medicines & Investigation Costs.

Phakic IOLs have to be explanted later in life around 50s and 60s as the natural lens inside the eye will continue to grow. During these stages, the Phakic IOL is removed and using Cataract Surgery one also gets Relief from High Spectacles Power during these later stages.

Most frequent questions and answers

In ICL we do not change the cornea’s shape or structure, a collamer lens is placed in fron of the natural lens inside the eye. This is considered safe for eyes with very high power and eyes with large pupil size. The vision disturbance at night is less compared to few basic versions of laser vision correction as the cornea’s shape is unaltered and quality of vision is enhanced.

People having Cylinderical power more than +/- 0.75 require a special lens with a special shape to correct the cylinder. These special cylindrical lenses are called TORIC ICL’s.

An anaesthetic (pain numbing) drops is used before surgery. These drops make the surgery painless for the entire duration of surgery.

ICL surgery is easily reversible and Removed very easily, these lenses are very flexible and can be removed or replaced Safely and quickly

EyePCL/ RIL/ Eyecryl on the other hand require more skill to remove and replace. Never the less the changed power can also be corrected by LASER Vision Correction if Cornea Permits

Only on Microscopic exam of the eye by eye doctors, one can detect if one is wearing ICL

Apart for the initial few days of Implantation where one is aware about PHAKIC IOL’s these lenses do not cause any disturbance or obstruction for a significant amount of time. As Patients age over 40 these Implanted eyes have to be carefully monitored atleast yearly for changes like Pressure as the Natural Lens inside the eye is always Increasing in size.

Phakic IOL’s are advised by expert eye surgeons after complete examination of the eye including all the scans to determine the best possible treatment for your eyes. These lenses are most Ideal solutions between 18 – 33 years of age. After 35 years of Age we normally correct High Refractive errors by the means of Cataract Surgery.

Avoid water entering your eyes for a week after surgery. You can have body Bath and Brush your teeth but you cannot splash water into your eyes for one week, Please do not rub or touch around your eyes for one week. You can use sterile wipes we have provided to clean around your eyes and your face. This cleaning procedure will be demonstrated at the time of discharge. Do not lift more than 5 Kilos. Patients feel recovered in a few hours after surgery however we recommend avoiding screen time for the first 48 hours. Light work from home can be done after 48 hours however resumption of full work is recommended only after 1 week.

How are the Follow-ups with eye surgeons Scheduled after ICL Surgery?

Follow-ups are important on day 1 , day 7 and day 30 following ICL Surgery. Its also important to visit us after 3 -6 months. Yearly or atleast two yearly follow-up are important till 40 years of age. After age 40 Yearly follow-ups are Mandatory

Sure, None of the Phakic IOL’s will come in the way of Laughing or crying and none of these will affect you. Just avoid rubbing or touching your eyes after surgery.

The short answer is yes, however we recommend eating light on the day of surgery and following day there are no restrictions.

ICLs are designed to be a long-term vision correction solution and can last indefinitely. However, periodic check-ups with an eye specialist are important to monitor their performance over time.

No, you should not be able to feel or see the ICL once it’s implanted in your eye. It is positioned behind the iris, so it’s not visible to others, and you won’t feel its presence.

Suitable candidates for ICL surgery are typically individuals with moderate to high myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism who are not good candidates for LASIK or PRK. A thorough eye examination by an ophthalmologist will determine if ICL is suitable for you.
