What is Glaucoma (Glaucoma surgery)?

Glaucoma is an eye disease that can damage your optic nerve which is situated at the back of the eye. That optic nerve supplies visual information to your brain from your eyes.

It usually happens when fluid builds up in the front part of your eye. That extra fluid increases the pressure in your eye, damaging the optic nerve. And this damage to the optic nerve could result in blindness.

What are the Causes of this Disease:

It can occur for several reasons.

  • Family history of glaucoma.
  • Poor or reduced blood flow to your optic nerve
  • High blood pressure
  • Blunt or chemical injury to your eye
  • Severe eye infection
  • Blocked blood vessels inside your eye
  • Inflammatory conditions

Symptoms of glaucoma

Different Symptoms (Glaucoma surgery):

There are some signs;

  • Your vision is suddenly blurry
  • You have severe eye pain
  • Narrowed vision (tunnel vision) or blind spots.
  • You have a headache
  • Eye redness
  • You see rainbow-colored rings

Types (Glaucoma surgery):

The front part of the eye is filled with a clear fluid called aqueous humor. Which has many functions including providing nutrition to delicate structures inside the eye. The excess amount of fluid gets drained through a sieve-like structure, known as the trabecular meshwork. If there is a mismatch in the production and drainage, eye pressure also known as  IOP increases and puts stress on the nerve of the eye, therefore slowly damaging it.

  • If the trabecular meshwork is open but fails to drain an adequate amount of fluid due to some reason, glaucoma happening due to it is called open-angle glaucoma
  • If the space harboring the trabecular meshwork gets narrow, trabecular meshwork gets closed, again preventing adequate drainage of fluid, therefore causing a special type is called Closed-angle glaucoma.

  • Occasionally it can happen even with normal or low pressure inside the eyes, due to internal defect or inherent weakness of nerves - this special type of glaucoma is called normal tension or low tension glaucoma ( NTG /LTG )

  • Apart from this certain medicines, other eye diseases, and sometimes systemic diseases involving eye structures can also cause glaucoma - otherwise known as secondary glaucoma

Risk Factors Of This Disease/ Glaucoma surgery:

However, certain risk factors might predict the possibility of getting this diseases;

  • People over 60 age at increased risk
  • High-powered glasses ( both plus and minus )
  • Family history with direct blood relations
  • Prolonged medication like steroids in any form
  • Injuries to the eye
  • Comorbidities - like uncontrolled diabetes, etc.

You might have to go through different testing to diagnose the correct type of glaucoma you have and receive the correct treatment and come for monitoring at regular intervals. Some of these tests are :

  1. Tonometry - IOP or eye pressure measurement
  2. Pachymetry - to measure corneal thickness
  3. Gonioscopy - assessment of drainage channels
  4. Visual fields / Humphrey Visual fields - to see the effect of glaucoma on your viewing field in front of your eyes
  5. OCT RNFL - assess the health of nerves
  6. OCT angio - measurement of blood circulation in nerve

FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers

It is a group of diseases that damage the eye’s optic nerve and can result in vision loss and even blindness.

About 60% of patients diagnosed with glaucoma eventually lost some vision. It’s important to emphasize, however, that this does not mean that 60% of patients went blind.

There is no cure (yet) for this disease, but if it’s caught early, you can preserve your vision and prevent vision loss. Taking action to preserve your vision and health is key.

A glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the health of which is vital for good vision. This damage is often caused by abnormally high pressure in your eye

It may occur amongst people with and without diabetes and can be a complication of diabetes if retinopathy develops. Glaucoma is caused by an excess amount of fluid pressing on the nerve at the back of the eye.

The doctor would take a look at the patient’s medical history and conduct a thorough eye examination. They may also opt to perform other tests. These tests are quick and pain-free.

  • Ophthalmoscopy for optical nerve damage
  • Tonometry for eye pressure measurement
  • Pachymetry for cornea thickness
  • Perimetry for peripheral side vision
  • Gonioscopy for eyes drainage angle
