In India, 25,000 people donate their eyes of the total deaths(1 Million+), from where only 50,000 donated eyes are collected. Every year around 15,000 corneal transplantations take place in India.
In the worldwide records, approximately 100,000 eye transplants were performed.
Can We Donate One Eye?
If an eye is blind and it is removed but is healthy in the front, that cornea can be used again. There are no instances of donation between people who are living as this is illegal.
How Long After Death Can Eyes be Donated
The eyes of the Donor can be removed within hours after death. The eyes of a donated person can save the vision of two blind people. Eye removal takes only 10-15 minutes and leaves no scar or disfigurement of the face.
